THE TAKEDA FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES 100 MILLION YEN AWARD TO HONOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENGINEERING

- New Foundation Also Announces "Techno-Entrepreneurship" Research and Development Grant Program -

MENLO PARK, Calif. and TOKYO, May 30, 2001 - The Takeda Foundation has announced the creation of a prestigious new international award - the Takeda Award - to be presented to individuals who have made outstanding achievements in creating and applying new engineering intellect and knowledge in the fields of social/economic well-being (information and electronics), individual/humanity well-being (life sciences), and world environmental well-being. One award will be given in each of these three fields, which refer to areas of application rather than the technological fields of awardees.
The monetary value for each award will be 100 million yen (approximately $800,000). Nominations for year 2001 awards have already been received and are now being evaluated. The names of the recipients of the first awards will be announced in September, and the award ceremony is scheduled for December 4.
Leading Silicon Valley research institute SRI International is working with the Foundation in the management of its award and grant programs, and in bringing the Takeda Foundation to worldwide significance through the encouragement of applied engineering intellect and applications.

New Award for Engineering Achievement to Encourage Life-Changing Innovation
The objective of the Foundation's award and grant activity is to encourage the creation and application of new knowledge that will generate substantial value for people in their daily lives, extending beyond the establishment of new knowledge in specialized fields, and are related in some way to measurement technologies. Purely academic achievements, with value only to specialists, will not be considered.
"Underpinning the Foundation's establishment is the belief that there is a complementary relationship between the development of new measurement technologies and the acquisition of new engineering intellect and knowledge," said Takeda Foundation Chairman Ikuo Takeda, the Foundation's Chairman and financial benefactor. "Advanced Measurement Intellect is playing an increasingly important role in the fields of life science and medicine, environmental understanding, and information and electronics."
The Takeda Foundation has also announced the commencement of a competition for research and development grants under its Techno-Entrepreneurship Award program. The Foundation has coined the term "techno-entrepreneurship" to define activities that challenge technological frontiers through the application of engineering intellect and knowledge. The call for topics and competition will be administered under an innovative "Cyber Workshop" screening process for selecting grant recipients.

About the Takeda Foundation
Awarding and supporting techno-entrepreneurship is the core goal of the Tokyo-based Takeda Foundation that was established in April 2001. In addition to its award and research grant programs, which are being implemented on an international basis, the Foundation is sponsoring fellowships and scholarships. The Foundation will also conduct research and disseminate information related to advanced measurement intellect and knowledge.
