A Flash Report on the Takeda Award Forum and Ceremony

On November 20, the Takeda Award Forum and Ceremony was held with the 2002 Takeda Awardees at the ANA Hotel in Akasaka, Tokyo. The Forum title was "Techno-entrepreneurship, engineering intellect and knowledge, and meeting people's needs." The Forum consisted of individual sessions for each of the three fields, held in parallel in the morning, and a panel discussion with all the awardees in the afternoon.

Happily, all this yearfs Awardees were able to attend the Forum. This yearfs Takeda award winners were Drs. Charles Elachi, Patrick Brown, Stephen Fodor, and Shuji Nakamura from the US, and Drs. Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, Nobuyoshi Fugono, and Ken'ichi Okamoto from Japan. Over 500 people attended both the morning sessions and the afternoon panel discussion. The sessions set the tone of the day, creating an atmosphere of excitement with frank and illuminating talks from the Awardees and enthusiastic questions from the audience.

At the panel discussion, the moderator gave a keynote talk about the concepts of the Takeda Award and Awardees then talked about their own thoughts on their achievements. Discussion covered various subjects including needs-oriented research versus basic research, and the complementary relationship between the public sector and private enterprises.

Contrasting with last year, this year's Award Ceremony was open to the public and formal congratulatory speeches were kept to a minimum in order that the audience could have more time to enjoy the Awardeesf talks. As with the rest of the dayfs events the ceremony was managed by the Foundation staff, without using any event agency, and so became quite a do-it-yourself event, appropriate for a people's award like the Takeda Award. More than 400 people were able to attend the ceremony.

After the ceremony, a cocktail reception was held in the hotel lobby and many people stayed to enjoy the opportunity of talking with the Awardees.

Full details of the Forum and the Ceremony will shortly be published on the Foundation's home page. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to those who have helped us to make the Takeda Award Forum & Ceremony 2002 such special events.

Thank you.
